PERSONAL STATEMENT

Having been employed for 25 years within both design and production environments, I have gained a diverse range of experience and skills.

Primarily possessing a solid design background, I have also attained extensive experience in project management, administration and marketing.

By nature, I am efficient, highly organized and conscientious, fully capable of managing projects and situations diplomatically and professionally.

Versatile and adept at working under pressure, I am well accustomed to handling several different projects simultaneously.

I am confident dealing with people at all levels and am equally at ease working as part of a team, or on my own initiative. My creative skills, coupled with my practical knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for design, enable me to seek innovative and realistic solutions to project briefs.

Self-motivated and always ready for a challenge, I adapt quickly to new environments and I am constantly eager to learn. Above all, I consider myself a sensible, reliable, and trustworthy person and I am confident I would make a valuable contribution to any company.

SPECIFIC AREAS OF EXPERIENCE

Detail and layout drawing - for manufacturing and site installation.

Originally possessing a background in producing drawings by hand and with nearly 20 years of CAD experience, I consider myself fully competent in producing high quality drawings in both 2D and 3D.

I have extensive experience in the following:

Office space planning, interior design, joinery setting-out, metalwork detailing, compiling of materials/parts lists and building surveying. I am familiar with many production and construction techniques, in particular joinery and metalwork manufacturing.

Design - I have been involved in a wide variety of design projects encompassing high street retail, bar and restaurant interiors, retail displays and visual merchandising displays including shop windows, furniture, signage and exhibition stands.

I also have extensive graphics experience and have often dealt with signage, in-store graphics, advertising, promotional material, packaging, and brand development projects. I am well accustomed to taking and interpreting client briefs and, being familiar with preparing and carrying out presentations to clients, I have developed strong presentation skills.

Project management - I have co-ordinated projects as varied as full shop fits through to print and packaging projects. Responsibilities have included budget control, project costing, quoting and invoicing.

Sourcing and specifying of products and services - I am fully familiar with outsourcing all kinds of contractors, manufacturing services and the sourcing of products.

Marketing - I have helped create means of marketing and brand development for some of my previous employers and their clients. I have also acquired much marketing and PR experience from being involved in projects outside my working life which includes voluntary work for a national charity and a local community arts organization.

Management and administration - I have experience of employee and contractor management both in-house and on site - including the recruitment of permanent, temporary and freelance personnel.

Computer experience - Being an experienced AutoCAD user and being competent with Microsoft Office and several other software packages, I consider myself very IT literate.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

October 2000 – July 2004.

CAD/Space Planning Specialist.

The Changing Workplace, Haywards Heath, West Sussex.

For my last employers, The Changing Workplace, I carried out projects for several major clients including;

Bradford & Bingley Building Society, Marconi, Northumbrian Water and University of Sussex.

Primarily working in-house within the Facilities Management departments, I was responsible for the organization and management of the building drawings in each company’s property portfolio.

I regularly carried out building surveys to create accurate drawing records necessary to help ensure efficient use of office space.

My responsibilities also included the management of office restructuring projects. This often involved a high degree of logistical organization and communication, liaising with all the personnel concerned, preparing proposal plans and providing detailed instructions to ensure that moves were completed successfully and with minimum disruption.

Since leaving to become self-employed I have maintained a good relationship with The Changing Workplace and occasionally still carry out work for them.

November 1999 - September 2000.

CAD Technician/Project Manager

Ashley Morgan Design, Leeds.

AMD were a small interior design consultancy specializing in bar and restaurant design.

The company was primarily involved with the design and project management of the 'Bar 38' nationwide chain of bars, owned by Scottish & Newcastle Retail.

May 1999 - October 1999.

Temporary Setting-Out Technician.

Barlow Joinery Production, Sheffield.

Employed for several months on an agency contract, I worked primarily for Barlow Joinery Production but was also seconded to the financial and retail design sectors of the Barlow Group.

Projects were completed for clients such as John Lewis, Lloyds, HSBC, British Airways, BT and Sainsburys.

April 1997 - May 1999.

Project Co-ordinator/Designer.

Section d, Harrogate.

Small design consultants specializing in the design of retail interiors, display systems, graphics and branding projects, primarily for major fashion retailers. Being the first employee of Section d, I had considerable involvement in developing the company structure.

Clients included the Arcadia Group, Habitat, BHS and FCUK.

June 1996 - April 1997.

Freelance Draughtsman.

Self-Employed.

During this period of self-employment I carried out a wide variety of contracts for several clients. This included regular projects for Section d, Hurst Group Shop Fitters, Associate Design Time and Metalwork Lancashire.

May1995 - June 1996.

Layout & Setting-Out Draughtsman.

Charles Castle & Company Ltd., Bradford.

Bankfitters/shopfitters with joinery production facilities.

Clients included Halifax PLC, HSBC, National & Provincial Building Society and Granada Motorway Services.

December 1994 - May 1995.

Freelance Draughtsman.

Self-Employed.

Employed to carry out interior design duties by the consultants involved in the Sheffield Canal Basin regeneration project.

The project included the complete refurbishment of a Grade 2 listed warehouse building.

January 1992 - March 1995.

Design Draughtsman.

DRM Display Industries, Leeds.

Retail display and shopfittings manufacturer.

Production facilities included joinery, metalwork fabrication, acrylic fabrication, rigid PVC foam fabrication, signage and screen-printing. Clients included Marks & Spencer, Top Man/Top Shop, ASDA, Bally Shoes and Harrods.

January 1988 - January 1992.

Principal Designer.

ASDA Stores Ltd., Leeds.

Employed within the Planning and Development Department, my specific duties initially involved planning sales floor layouts for new and refurbished stores.

I was also involved in the design and detailing of store features such as sales kiosks, counters and point of sale fixtures.

I was later seconded to a small design team responsible for revamping sixty acquired ex-Gateway stores to the ASDA specification.

Overseeing the conversion programmes for store bakeries, restaurants and food preparation areas, I surveyed stores throughout the U.K., designed new alternative schemes with detailed costings and administered budgets of up to £.5 million to implement the necessary renovations. Developing schemes from proposed stage to final installation, the work required close liaison with various in-house departments, contractors and suppliers, and demanded prudent organizational skills and a thorough understanding of store operations and equipment.

June1985 - December 1987.

Layout and Detail Draughtsman.

Stockrail Ltd., Heckmondwike.

Specialized in the manufacture and installation of garment handling and storage systems for the clothing industry.

I was also involved in the design of mezzanine floors, staircases, fire escapes and shopfitting fixtures.

Clients included SR Gents, Next and the Burton Group.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS

INTERESTS AND OTHER INFORMATION

My many personal interests and leisure time activities include:

All aspects of art and design, architecture, the outdoors, music, walking, mountain biking, camping, swimming, history, archaeology, the environment, travel and animals.

I’m a very creative person and I enjoy producing artwork and developing my own designs. I am particularly interested in printmaking and I’m an active member of West Yorkshire Print Workshop.

I hold a full, clean driving licence.
